Black Lives Matter Prompted this:

Over the past year or so, I have attended and been involved in many discussions with Black and other People of Color in our communities. I have heard them say many times that white people need to have these discussions with other whites because it is so EXHAUSTING to always be reached out to and expected to educate and teach whites how to be better people around race issues. I shared discussions with other educators and discovered that almost every single visibly identifiable POC presenter has been asked to teach or speak on racial issues even if they don’t actually offer that class. Imagine what it must be like to have people expect you to be willing to teach and discuss something simply because of your appearance!

It’s taken me a while to be willing to address this discussion on more than a one on one basis. I didn’t think I knew enough. I had a list of excuses. And I admit that is all they were. I know that anyone who is even one step ahead of another can teach.

When the Black Lives Matter Protests came to light again after yet another blatant example of the active unfairness of the current social system, I finally decided to act. I reached out to others who I knew could be opened and vulnerable and set a date. then we had the discussion. This is the first of what I know will be many discussions we will have. Lee Harrington and Mina Hart both agreed to join me. Below is the video.

If you have suggestions on other white people you would like me to reach out to and see if they would be willing to join in a similar discussion in the future, or would like to volunteer yourself, please let me know.

Together we can all work to unlearn the racism that we unintentionally picked up in our world and help create actual equality for all.
